Cause hyperpolarization in the postsynaptic membrane.

Make it more difficult to generate a nerve impulse.

Cause depolarization in the postsynaptic membrane.

Prevent the generation of action potential.

Excitatory neurotransmitters depolarize the postsynaptic membrane, making it easier to generate a nerve impulse.
